Vietnam women’s volleyball before Asiad 20: outside hitter crisis and one roster spot left

I do not trust the first viewing; I trust the third review. When I replayed Vietnam’s matches at the 2026 Asian Women’s Volleyball Championship in China, the first impression was that the team could still manage. That impression disappeared when I counted the available outside hitters. The 20th Asian Games starts on September 19, 2026, in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. Head coach Nguyễn Tuấn Kiệt has little time to repair a broken outside hitter group. Vi Thị Như Quỳnh was missing due to health issues. Nguyễn Thị Uyên suffered a serious injury during the tournament. With Uyên and Như Quỳnh unavailable, the coach has only three outside hitters: Trần Thị Thanh Thúy, Phạm Quỳnh Hương (18), and Bùi Thị Ánh Thảo (17). Both teenagers are too young to carry the pressure of a major Asian Games. Uyên was the reception anchor. Without her, Vietnam’s fast offense becomes fragile against strong serving teams like China, Japan, and Thailand. Như Quỳnh used to share the attacking load with Thanh Thúy. Without her, Thanh Thúy becomes the only scoring option and an easy target for blockers. The Asian Games allows only 12 players, two fewer than the Asian Championship. Vietnam reportedly has an 11-player core and needs only one more name, leaving zero margin for another injury. Replacement candidates such as Đinh Thị Thúy, Nguyễn Thị Phương, and Phạm Thị Nguyệt Anh have not shown consistent form. No one has strong statistical support. The real problem is not injury alone. It is the lack of squad depth built over the cycle. Adding one outside hitter will not solve the reception problem. Coach Nguyễn Tuấn Kiệt should focus on positional solutions, not motivation. Testing the two young players in warm-up matches and measuring their reception rate under pressure is more valuable than listing names. Asiad 20 will be a harsh test for a young roster, but it will reveal the true level of Vietnam’s next generation. I do not predict results; I count inaccurate receptions. That number will decide the final standing.
